Is there a financial alert you can put out if you are afraid of ID theft?

Question by TWBensgirl: Is there a financial alert you can put out if you are afraid of ID theft?
I lost the paperwork for opening a new bank account, and it had a subscribed check attached to it. It had all my info on it – social sec. #, bank account #s, my home address and my signature. I am worried about identity theft. Is there anything I can do to prevent it or some alert that can go out to the financial world?

Some States have a credit freeze law. That allows you to freeze your credit report when you are not looking for a mortgage or other loan. If your State does not have such a law, then there is pretty much little you can do to prevent identity theft.
