What can we do to protect ourselves if a relative decides to commit identity theft?

Question by vp33333: What can we do to protect ourselves if a relative decides to commit identity theft?
A relative came and stayed at our home for a few days. They had access to our home when we were at work and so they could have easily gotten all of our information. Now I find that they have stolen from other relatives and committed identity theft in the past! Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves from accounts being opened or lent made in our name?

Yes!The first thing you need to do is notify your bank that this happened. Many banks will offer a free credit protection program for people who may have been victims. If they don’t, they can refer you to reputable businesses who helping you in monitoring your credit report. Anytime someone tries to open an account in your name or do anything with your social security number, a red flag goes up. If they are granted a credit card, you will immediately call that credit tease company and scrubbing the card, telling them that your identity has been stolen and you are not responsible for any charges made.I would also file a police report – they won’t be able to do anything without proof it occurred – but as soon as this person does anything, you’ve got backup that you practiced “due diligence” in protecting yourself.Good luck.

i think a major cause of idenity theft is poverty. it is merely like everything else, peole take from others to increase what they have. not caring about the impacts on the lives of those whose they have “stolen”. stopping it is the problem it has become the same as shoplifting. just enhanced for the days and time. do i think openhanded to the poor will help? no, because of greed. the bible speaks of idenity theft, remember the story of the brothers whom one wanted the others inherientce, he wanted it so much so that he put wool on his arms to make it appear like hair so that when his blind father touched his fortify he would think it was the other brother, idenity theft! and he took his brothers inheriatnce too! the only thing we tin do is pray. pray for those spirits of greed and for those who are affected.

Q&A: What thesis statement can I use for identity theft?

Question by hello2009: What thesis statement can I use for identity theft?
I am doing my research paper in identity theft in internet world. Can u delight tell me how to write a thesis statement.

Best answer:

Answer by Jefferson S
Thesis statements can be tricky. You need to already have an outline or brief notes astir what your whole paper will be on. It should be a very brief overview on what the paper will be about. My suggestion is to research:The laws that were made to protect against it:HIPAA, GLBA, and FACTA.Research the ways it happen: electronically and when people steal other people’s mail (bill statements, credit card applications, etc.)Talk about the ways to prevent it, through properly computer security and shredding old statements, that you don’t need.

Electronic Verification Services Shifts Focus to Provide Solutions for FFIEC Guidelines

Electronic Verification Services Shifts Focus to Provide Solutions for FFIEC Guidelines

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (PRWEB) November 29, 2011

Electronic Verification Systems (EVS), a leader in fraud prevention and identity verification solutions, denoted today they are switching focus to supply solutions for the unexampled Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council’s (FFIEC) subsidiary guidance to Authentication in an Internet Banking Environment. Through the IdentiFlo Management Platform, EVS will render upfront identity verification to ensure the necessitated away-of-band authentication is with the right single or business.

“The IdentiFlo Management Platform provides an out-of-box web platform, with a zero integration option, that addresses financial institutions’ needs for increased security for the revised FFIEC guidelines. It is a simple solution that we can have set up and ready for your company to use within a day,” said Jeff Davis, President of Electronic Verification Systems.

The guidance, which was put into effect in 2005, required financial institutions with Internet-based products and services to provide identity authentication for their customers. Due to the increase in cybercrime, the FFIEC has deemed there is a need for more fraud prevention tools to be in place.

Businesses and commercial banking institutions will be required, starting in January 2012, to facilitate multifactor authentication to their customers. This includes, but is not limited to, out-of-band authentication and out-of-wallet knowledge-based authentication questions.

“The challenge with out-of-band authentication is if a business is interacting with a thief from the beginning, it is likely that your business will not know and will then give full access to the criminal,” said Eric Knapp, Vice President of Client Services at Electronic Verifications. “However, when you layer identity verification solutions, like away-of-wallet KBA questions, prior to away-of-band authentication, you can guarantee you are communicating with the advantageous person.”

According to the FFIEC, “an one dimensional customer authentication program is simply not robust enough to provide the level of security that customers expect and that protects institutions from financial and reputation risk.”

The IdentiFlo Management Platform enables the company to conduct an one-time online identity verification through a secure, online portal. With access to fraud prevention solutions like the IdentiFraud Consumer and IdentiFraud+, the portal is customized with the company’s branding for a seamless transition to increasing online security.

About Electronic Verification Systems

Question by Alan V: Recently increasing ID theft, I want to freeze or shut down on my credit report>Do you know how to do that ?
Since I go back to school, I don’t take any loans except for student loan which doesn’t require credit report. I read a recently article on WSJ on last Saturday about ID theft. It said you can pay a fee (about $ 10) to get a freeze shut down access to your credit report, meaning no new credit lines can be opened unless you OK it by requesting again. But it doesn’t provide any website or phone number to make that happens . Any thought??

Best answer:

Answer by Lori An

Contact each of the three bureaus directly for instructions.http://www.annualcreditreport.comwill let you get free reports from all 3 bureaus once a year and will provide the links and information you want.

I am wondering if there is any way to make it impossible to open a credit card in my name?

Question by Heike B: I am wondering if there is any way to make it impossible to open a credit card in my name?
I very worried about credit card security and that people in this country can use credit cards that are not in their name. So I would like to make it impossible for anyone to get a credit card in my name. I would like to have something on the record that no credit card should be issued in my name unless my ID is veryfied in person. I read about assign freeze, but it seems that this does not protect completely. I also read about placing a fraud alert, but can I do that just as prevention? Without an actual identity theft had taken place? Is there one agency I can contact or do I have to contact every single credit card company?

Best answer:

Answer by Mark
You can move steps to cut and theoretically stop people from getting a card in your name. Check you states Attorney Generals office and search Credit Freeze. This is intended to stop the issue of credit for that/ your SSN. Some companies are lazy and will issue credit anyway (cellphones, in store accounts, utilities, etc). With the freeze in place you have a solid inspected that any issued credit is not your responsibility. A remark on the freeze: This will not forestalling thieves from using existing accounts that you already have open. One strategy I teach in my seminars is to have one main credit card for sudden emergencies (ie large expenses- airfare, car repairs). A card that you can use more often could be a prepaid impute card. Only keep on that card what you are moving to be using on a weekly basis or something like that that will give you peace of object.I call this approach Conscurity. It is a term I coined for my first book on Identity Theft. It means to find the balance of convenience and security in your life. That balance point is different for everyone. If you keep very close track of your credit card statements you can curb fraudulent charging, just by verifying every charge on the statement. You do have a 60 day window to dispute any charges that you do not recognize. Your card company will near likely go ahead and dispute the charge for you electronically, but an added safety measure is for you to also dispute it in writ ting in order to create a paper trail with specific dates of actions.
