Jim Perry asked:

Why would you want to go about preventing identity fraud? Consider these examples:

o	A woman recently pled guilty to racking up $764,000 in bad checks and then declaring bankruptcy in the name of her victim.

o	A man in Florida pled guilty to obtaining names, addresses, and social security numbers from a website and then used them to get car loans. He then sold the cars and walked away from the loans.

o	A woman in California obtained a false driver’s license in another woman’s name and charged up $17,000 in credit card and department store charge card bills.

Preventing identity fraud is a serious concern for many people these days. 9 million Americans will suffer from identity theft this year alone. And, the numbers are increasing despite the best efforts of the government to crack down on these thieves. The U.S. Department of Justice admits that the damage takes far longer to fix than it did to incur.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to get an identity theft protection service. These companies:

o	Monitor your credit and banking records, court and criminal cases, rental history and more. When they see suspicious activity they contact you.

o	If there are problems, they stop it right away. They help you freeze the accounts and report trouble to the various bureaus.

o	Then, they help you correct the situation. They will help you contact the police so these criminals are taken off the streets. And, they generally back up their services with a no fee guarantee. Often, they will cover any losses you incur as well.

Judith

Mike Selvon asked:

Identity theft prevention has been a very real issue in our society for some time now. There are plenty of cases of online identity theft and fraud, but not all the scams are online.

Not all thieves are working through computers to steal your identity and take you for a financial ride. Some of the most dangerous possible identity theft scenarios don’t involve computers at all, but they can still clean out the unaware consumer.

One of the oldest and most devastating scams involves the ATM machine. Thieves can install equipment on otherwise legitimate machines that steal ATM card and PIN numbers. An attachment fits over the original slot and is used to capture the information from the card as the ATM is used.

The thieves usually hide nearby and receive the wireless transmissions from the doctored ATMs. With the stolen information, they can commit identity theft and fraud worth thousands by withdrawing from the accounts. Theft prevention relies on consumer awareness.

Watch out for ATM machines that appear out of place or any machines that look like they could have a card reader attached to them. A lot of these are so cleverly made, you may not notice anything different, but any machine that asks you to reenter your PIN more than once could be a telltale sign.

Trust your instincts. This may be your best weapon for identity theft prevention. Use ATM machines located in banks, and check the card reader to determine seamless integration with the machine.

The telephone is another area where possible identity theft and fraud are committed. It works this way: the would-be thief phones to tell you he or she is investigating fraudulent charges on your card, often regarding a credit company that you’ve never heard of.

The thief then tries to convince you to give out your card number, your name as it appears on the card, and the card’s expiration date. Theft prevention entails that you hang up and call the number on your credit card to ask about any possible identity theft investigation.

Another possible identity theft scam involving credit cards is carried out when the person calling says he or she needs to verify your card information at an online merchant or pay service. You can be a smart consumer and practice theft prevention by not giving out your credit card number to anyone soliciting information.

Identity theft and fraud are all around in our modern world, but consumers can learn how to avoid a large percentage of the crime simply by being educated.

Alvin

Sarah Russell asked:

Today, there are a number of new methods being developed to help prevent identity thieves from successfully preying on unwary victims. While some of these new technologies have sparked heated debates on personal privacy, others are based on sound forensics methods that have been in use for decades. Regardless of where you stand, chances are we’ll witness the implementation of one – or all – of the following technologies in the next decade.

Fingerprint Scanning

Even though most stores don’t yet have fingerprint scanners, they are rapidly becoming less expensive and more readily available. Already, in a number of large corporations, employees clock in and sign onto their computer terminals using a scanner that compares their thumbprint to one on file. This technology could be used to help prevent identity fraud if it were installed in everything from home computers to telephones – but the expense of doing so might outweigh the potential benefits.

Retina Scanners

Similar to fingerprint scanners, there are also devices that can scan the retina of your eyes and match them with images on file. Even though this may seem dangerous – or more like science fiction than reality – many researchers feel that the technology is both safe and economically viable. Implementing this type of technology would also be expensive, but could be used in limited, high-risk areas like personal banking and credit requests.

Disposable Credit Card Numbers

Some researchers have developed a chip that ensures that your credit card number changes after each transaction. Basically, this means that your credit card must always be synchronized with the bank’s computer. Using this technology would prevent identity thieves that manage to steal a static card number from doing any real damage. On the other hand, this technology may not be of much use if someone manages to physically steal your credit card – depending on how the how the information is transmitted.

Implantable Radio Chips

Many dog and cat owners are already familiar with identity chips that are implanted in their pet’s ear. Typically, these chips transmit information to a GPS system, which reveals where the animal is should it be lost or stolen. Similarly, implantable chips for humans can do everything from store medical information to banking codes. While this may have some benefits in terms of protecting sensitive information, there are religious groups and privacy advocates that are strongly opposed to these technologies.

Even though identity thieves always seem to be one step ahead of their victims and law enforcement, new technologies are currently begin developed to stop them. Some of these technologies are aimed at making any information you divulge useless in the hands of a criminal, while others aim to strengthen security measures already in place. Regardless of which method becomes the takes off, it’s safe to assume that we’ll see some major changes in the ways transactions are handled in the coming years.

However, it’s also important to realize that technologies designed to protect your personal information can be compromised. Hackers and thieves intent on stealing your private information will more than likely find a way to get around almost any type of technology that emerges. For this reason, it’s important to take steps to protect your personal information and avoid identity scams besides resorting to technological means. Being responsible with your own identity is half the battle in stopping identity theft.

Tyrone

Gerald Shaw asked:

CreditExpert.co.uk, the leading online credit monitoring and identity fraud protection service from Experian, has reported an increase of 12% in identity fraud today. According to data compiled from the National Hunter, a fraud prevention database under Experian, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of people using fraudulent identities to apply for mortgages, automotive financing, loans and credit cards since the start of this year. This has resulted to an increase in illegitimate activities by identity thieves which ultimately affect the people from whom credit information were stolen from.

During the first three months of 2009, there was a reported 11.91 increase in cases of identity fraud for every 10,000 bank applications. During the second quarter from April to June, there were 12.72% cases of identity fraud for every 10,000 applications. This was an increase of 6.8% compared with data from the start of the year. In the third quarter from July to September, there was a reported 13.37% cases of identity fraud for every 10,000 applications which is an increase of 12.3% compared with the start of 2009. These figures are very alarming especially for consumers who may not know that their credit information is already being stolen.

CreditExpert’s Darryl Bowman says that “The surge in cases of identity fraud is very worrying. As we get wiser to protecting ourselves from fraud, it’s clear that criminals are working even harder to steal our personal details so they can apply for credit.” He says that signs to look out for as signs of fraudulent activity include emails from anonymous senders, unexpected phone calls and missing post. Those who are doing this illegal activity know this that’s why they use strategies that cannot be easily detected. Sometimes even a new catalogue account at a new address could make a difference to your important lines of credit and can lead to an issue for fraud victims.

To protect your credit card and other bank information, you can sign up with a credit monitoring company to give you credit monitoring information so you can be sure that only legitimate transactions are made under your name. Also be sure to not give out your credit information to anyone especially to those who send suspicious emails, phone calls or letters, which are also “phishing”. Immediately report incidents of identity fraud to the authorities and to your bank so that they can stop whatever illegitimate activities the identity thief is trying to do with your credit information.

Shane
